About Me

My name is Serena and I'm 28 years old. I am an Assistant Language Teacher at a junior high school and a senior high school in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. Originally from the state of Oklahoma, I came to Japan in October of 2021 through the JET Program. You can read more about the JET Program on their website here.

I majored in English at Northeastern State University in 2019. Since I was in high school I have been interested in living and working abroad. I found out about the JET Program through YouTube, shortly after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. I was watching videos on YouTube about the disaster and came across a video made by an ALT living in Japan. Through watching her videos, I became interested in teaching English in Japan and learned about the JET Program.

At first, I didn't think teaching was something I wanted to do as a career, but as I gained teaching and tutoring experience in my last couple of semesters in college, I realized teaching was something I really enjoy and might even be good at. After I leave Japan, I plan on getting my teaching certification in Oklahoma so I can teach high school English.
